Can you apply for the Global Talent Visa from Pakistan?
Yes. The UK Global Talent Visa has no nationality restriction and no requirement that you have ever lived in or visited the United Kingdom, so a Pakistani software engineer, designer, data scientist or technical founder can apply entirely from Pakistan. The route runs in two stages. Stage 1 is the Tech Nation endorsement, where the endorsing body confirms you meet the Digital Technology criteria. Since 4 August 2025 this is completed on a single GOV.UK Stage 1 endorsement form - the separate Tech Nation application form has been withdrawn, though Tech Nation remains the endorsing body. The criteria are the same wherever you sit: you must satisfy the mandatory criterion plus at least two of the four optional criteria, and you may apply either as a leader (Exceptional Talent) or as a potential leader (Exceptional Promise). Nothing about being in Pakistan changes the standard you are judged against. What being outside the United Kingdom does change is three practical things - how you handle documents, how long the visa stage takes, and how you evidence work done for the kind of employers common in Pakistan. Do you need document legalisation or an apostille for Pakistan?
For most applicants, most of the evidence needs no legalisation at all. The Digital Technology route runs on digital artefacts - code repositories, product metrics, press coverage, salary evidence, letters of recommendation and a personal statement - and these are submitted as ordinary uploads, not as legalised originals. It is worth understanding the exception, however, because it varies by country and Pakistan is a specific case.
An apostille is a single-step certificate that many countries accept under the Hague Apostille Convention. Pakistan is not a party to that convention, so a document from Pakistan that needs to be officially recognised abroad is normally handled through attestation - a legalisation chain rather than a one-page apostille. In broad terms that can mean the issuing body, then the relevant Pakistani ministry, then the receiving country's requirements. Because these steps and the bodies involved change, we do not state a fixed procedure here: confirm the current position with the relevant Pakistani authorities and check what the Home Office actually asks for before you spend money attesting anything.
Two rules are stable and worth acting on now. First, any document that is not in English needs a certified English translation; if your degree certificate, employment letters or press coverage are in Urdu, budget for professional translation. Second, do not over-legalise. Applicants from Pakistan sometimes spend weeks attesting documents the Global Talent route never asks to be attested. Work out what the endorsement genuinely requires first - the answer is usually far less than the folklore suggests.
How long does it take to apply from Pakistan?
The published decision times are the same from Pakistan as anywhere. The Tech Nation endorsement decision usually takes 5 to 8 weeks. The Stage 2 visa decision is usually about three weeks when you apply from outside the United Kingdom - and applying from Pakistan is an out-of-country application, so the three-week benchmark is the right one for you, not the longer in-country timeline that switchers face.
The two stages can be applied for at the same time, and there is a useful safety net in the mechanics: if the endorsement is refused, the linked visa application is rejected and that fee refunded, and a Stage 1 endorsement refusal is not an immigration refusal and leaves no mark on your immigration history. What the official clocks do not include is preparation. The realistic timeline from Pakistan is dominated by the weeks you spend assembling evidence, securing referees and writing the personal statement - not by the Home Office. Does working at a services or outsourcing company hurt a Pakistani applicant?

Pakistan's technology sector is weighted heavily towards services, outsourcing and client delivery: a large share of engineers and designers work at software houses and export-oriented firms building for overseas clients, rather than at product companies shipping their own software. The Digital Technology route is explicitly looking for product-led technology work and evidence of individual impact. Service-based experience judged "not product-led" is a recurring reason applications are not endorsed, and achievements stated at team or client level without individual attribution are another.
The mistake is to conclude that services experience cannot qualify. It can. The task is to reframe it. Instead of describing the client you delivered for, evidence the product you built, the technical decisions you personally owned, the architecture or system you designed, and the users, revenue or performance outcomes your work drove. If your firm built a platform used by real end-users, that platform is your product story - name the technology, show your commits or design artefacts, and attribute the specific parts that were yours. Recognition that exists only inside your own employer is weak; recognition that is visible outside it - conference talks, open-source contributions, published writing, external press - is what the criteria reward.
