What is it?
A recommendation letter is a signed statement from a senior person in your field who confirms, from direct personal knowledge, that you meet the Global Talent Visa talent criteria. The Digital Technology route asks for three of them. Tech Nation, the endorsing body, reads them as independent testimony that your achievements are genuine and your own, and assesses them alongside your evidence pack rather than instead of it.
What counts, and what does it require?
Three letters, up to three A4 pages each, from three different senior referees at product-led digital technology organisations who know your work personally. Every part of that rule matters:
- Three letters - no more, no fewer. Two is short of the requirement; four or five does not strengthen the case.
- Up to three sides of A4 each. The three letters and your CV sit outside the main evidence pack of up to ten documents, so they never use up one of your ten slots.
- Senior referees. A CTO, VP of Engineering, founder, senior investor or recognised expert, well established in the digital technology sector.
- Product-led organisations. The referee's organisation should build its own digital products, not primarily deliver services or consultancy to others.
- First-hand knowledge. Each referee must have worked with you closely enough to describe what you personally did and its impact.
What are the common mistakes?
The single most common failure is a letter that is vague, generic, or simply mirrors the applicant's own personal statement - a pattern Tech Nation's guidance itself names as a primary reason applications are not endorsed. Other recurring patterns reported by applicants and advisers: referees who are not senior enough (a line manager or peer); referees at service-led rather than product-led organisations; templated praise with no specific projects or outcomes; and achievements stated at team level ("we built") rather than a clear account of what you individually contributed, leading to "insufficient evidence of individual impact". Strong letters do the opposite: specific, first-hand, and describing your individual contribution and its measurable effect.
How does it fit the wider application?
The three letters are one of three moving parts, sitting alongside your CV and your evidence pack of up to ten documents. To be endorsed you must satisfy the mandatory criterion plus at least two of the four optional criteria, and the letters corroborate the story your evidence tells. The endorsement decision itself is usually made within five to eight weeks.
