What is Optional Criterion 3?
Optional Criterion 3 recognises significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions to the digital technology sector, made as a founder, senior executive, employee or freelancer. It is one of the four optional criteria, of which an applicant must meet at least two alongside the mandatory criterion. It suits people who have built things: shipped products, grown user bases and revenue, designed the systems others depend on, or founded companies.
What counts as evidence for OC3?
Evidence for OC3 counts when it shows a contribution that is both significant to the field and clearly attributable to you as an individual. Strong examples include a product you led that reached real users, growth figures you personally drove, an architecture or open-source project you authored, or a company you founded. Each artefact sits inside the maximum of ten documents, up to three sides of A4, and is strongest when a credible third party states plainly that the outcome was yours. Your CV and three recommendation letters sit outside the ten-document count.
What are the common mistakes with OC3?
The most common mistake is describing achievements at company or team level without showing what you personally did, which the endorsing body records as insufficient evidence of individual impact. Recognition that exists only inside your own employer, contributions with no external corroboration, and evidence outside the relevant recency window are further recurring patterns reported by applicants and advisers. A contribution can be impressive and still fail OC3 if the reader cannot separate your hand from the organisation - attribution, not scale, is usually what is missing.
How does OC3 fit the wider application?
OC3 is one piece of a structured case: the mandatory criterion establishes that you are a leader or potential leader, and you then evidence at least two of the four optional criteria, so OC3 is typically paired with another optional criterion rather than standing alone. It also informs your route choice between Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise - indefinite leave to remain after three years as a leader, or five years as a potential leader.

How does the £99 assessment help with OC3?
The £99 Fit Assessment tells you, in writing, whether your OC3 evidence demonstrates individual contribution or reads as team-level work before you commit to an application. It scores every component - the mandatory criterion, each of OC1 to OC4, your letters and documentation - recommends Talent or Promise, maps a ten-document evidence plan, and is available as a £199 option that includes a one-hour case discussion. The fee is refunded in full if you engage Endorsa for a document-preparation package, so it is the sensible step before you risk £766 in government fees on a case whose contributions criterion is not yet watertight.
